Design and fit: why comfort matters more than you think
This is where things get interesting. Apple used more than 10,000 ear scans and 100,000 hours of user research to shape the AirPods Pro 3, and it shows. The Pro 3 arrives with a redesigned shape with smaller earcups that better align with the geometry of the ear canal, plus new eartips that combine silicone with foam for a tighter seal.
That research pays off in everyday use. Apple now includes five different sizes of ear tips, including a new extra-small option, so even the smallest ear canals can get the seal that keeps long sessions comfortable and keeps noise out.
The AirPods 4 stick with the open-ear vibe. They are the smallest AirPods in the current lineup, with a flatter, thinner earbud design that many find more comfortable than previous generations. The trade-off is clear: a less secure, more open fit compared to the Pro 3 inner seal. Wear these for walking, not running.
Sound quality: where the real differences emerge
The audio story is divided into two. AirPods Pro 3 deliver improved bass response, a wider soundstage, and clearer vocals through a multi-port acoustic design. Apple revised the drivers and their angle to deliver sound more directly to your ears, so it feels like a small concert taking center stage.
In testing, Apple’s custom high-excursion drivers have custom high dynamic range amplifiers that handle the punch of hard rock and the silence of acoustic guitar without smearing details. Switch from a bass-heavy track to a vocal-forward ballad and you’ll hear the pivot immediately.
The AirPods 4 go another way. Their sound signature has deep, dark bass, almost the complete opposite of the bright, neutral tuning of the AirPods Pro 2. They’re not a sonic powerhouse, but they do include a larger mouth compared to the third-generation AirPods, allowing for more consistent sound quality.
So what do you want to hear? If you lean towards electronica or hip-hop, the warmer lean of the 4 will fit well. If you want precision across genres, the Pro 3’s balanced presentation wins.
Noise Cancellation: The Great Divide
This is where the $70 price difference quickly appears. The AirPods Pro 3 offer up to twice the noise cancellation of the AirPods Pro 2 and about four times the noise reduction of the original AirPods Pro, according to Apple. The improved seal of the new ear pads helps make ANC settings more precise, reducing HVAC hum, road noise, and that endless office chatter.
In real use, the Pro 3 turns the constant hum of the subway into a murmur. Lively conversations still emerge, but less so. The secret is simple: Apple increased the passive noise isolation with foam pads, and then the active system cleans up what’s left.
The AirPods 4 with ANC have a different design. This is the first time noise cancellation has been included on open AirPods. They’re surprisingly effective with a rating of 6/10, but AirPods 4 with ANC can block out some noise, but not much compared to a sealed internal design. The impressive thing is that the open ear cancellation works.
Battery life and durability: practical considerations
For daily use, resistance is important. The AirPods Pro 3 promise up to 8 hours with active noise cancellation on, or up to 10 hours with noise control off (transparency mode), plus about 24 hours total, including the case. This is a notable jump, battery life in ANC mode increased from 6 hours to 8 hours over the previous generation.
The AirPods 4 offer 5 hours without ANC or 4 hours with it enabled, and maintain the same total of 30 hours with the case. You’ll be recharging them more frequently on long days, although the smaller case is easy to slip into your pocket.
In terms of resistance, the AirPods Pro 3 have IP57 water resistance, which means they are protected against sweat and rain, and should survive if dropped into a sink or puddle. The AirPods 4 are IP54 certified, good for basic protection but not the same peace of mind.
If you train outdoors, that gap is the confidence you may feel. With the Pro 3, you’ll stop worrying about drizzle and sweat and just keep running.
Features that differentiate them
The AirPods Pro 3 bring new tricks. Heart rate sensors in each earbud allow for tracking without an Apple Watch, using custom sensors that pulse infrared light 256 times per second. In workouts, accuracy aligned closely with dedicated trackers, within a few beats per minute on easy jogs and harder intervals.
There is also Live Translation in beta, which supports real-time voice translation that works offline and expects full sentences. It is supported by the H2 chip, voice isolation, ANC and beamforming microphones. Simply put, it feels like science fiction when you’re navigating a coffee order in a new country.
AirPods 4 keep the controls simple and familiar. Both models let you play/pause with a single press and change tracks with multiple taps, and the Pro 3 takes it up a notch by allowing volume adjustment with a swipe. Both support live translation features, with a more advanced version on the Pro 3.
The nifty party trick: Head gestures now accept or reject calls with a nod or nod. It sounds silly until your hands are covered in flour.
Bottom line: Which AirPods should you buy?
This is where we land. The AirPods 4 should be the default choice for most potential buyers. At $179 for the ANC model versus $249 for the AirPods Pro 3, they offer great value with surprisingly effective noise cancellation and all-day comfort.
The AirPods 4 hit the sweet spot, most of the Pro features without the premium price or potential fit fatigue. They are considered the most comfortable AirPods to date, and for many, the comfort outweighs the small audio gains.
There is a problem. You should only purchase AirPods Pro 3 if you are happy with their in-ear fit. They provide better sound quality and active noise cancellation, but can be uncomfortable during prolonged use.
So choose by priority. If noise cancellation is your top priority, the AirPods Pro 3 offer 4x better performance than standard AirPods, a gift for frequent travelers and open office dwellers. If you want to monitor your heart rate without a watch, the Pro 3’s health features may justify the extra expense. For most people who want great wireless headphones with good ANC and comfort, the AirPods 4 with ANC are the best value for money.
