Arsenal face anxious wait as Viktor Gyokeres injury setback
Arsenal’s hopes of maintaining momentum heading into the winter window have been hit by concerns over Viktor Gyokeres, with the Swedish striker ruled out of this weekend’s Premier League clash against Sunderland due to a muscle injury.
Gyokeres out after Burnley setback
The striker, who has been in good form since arriving in north London, suffered a hamstring problem during Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor. He was taken off at half-time and subsequently missed the Champions League win against Slavia Prague earlier this week.
National team coach Janne Andersson also opted to exclude the 27-year-old from Sweden’s latest squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia, further underlining the seriousness of the issue.
Arsenal have confirmed that Gyokeres is undergoing scans to determine the full extent of the damage and Mikel Arteta is expected to offer a clearer update during his press conference on Friday.
Arteta expresses concern over explosive forward
Speaking earlier in the week, Arteta admitted his uneasiness about the situation, pointing out the rarity of Gyokeres’ injury problems and the nature of the discomfort he was feeling.
“I’m worried because he didn’t have many muscle problems and he had to leave the field after feeling something,” the Arsenal manager said. “Obviously that’s never a good sign, especially for a player who relies on power and explosiveness.”
Arteta also emphasized the unpredictable nature of recovery times, insisting the club’s medical staff are working carefully to assess the issue. “We are digging deeper to understand where we are in terms of his injury and we will communicate when we know more. I was disappointed after the game at Burnley, but this is part of football. Progress is not always linear.”
Merino takes a step forward in the absence of Gyokeres
With Gyokeres unavailable, Mikel Merino led the line in Prague and responded impressively by scoring two goals in a convincing 3-0 victory. The Spanish midfielder-turned-forward is expected to reprise his role this weekend when Arsenal travel to face Sunderland, who have made a good start to their Premier League campaign and are currently fourth in the table.
Teenage striker Andre Harriman Annous, who made his senior debut against Brighton last week, could once again be named among the reserves as Arsenal’s only natural centre-forward option.
Injury concerns increase at Arsenal
Gyokeres joins a growing list of first-team absentees as Arteta’s side continue to endure a demanding fixture schedule. Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke are all aiming to return before the north London derby on November 23, while Gabriel Jesus will remain sidelined until late December or early January.
Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga also missed the midweek European match, with no confirmed date for his return.
While Arsenal remain within reach of the top of the Premier League, the depth of Arteta’s squad is now being tested. Gyokeres’ fitness will be monitored closely over the coming days, in the hope that the initial signs of a hamstring strain do not turn into a long-term setback.
