A big part of their success has fallen on the shoulders of second-year quarterback Caleb Williams, who leads the NFL in fourth-quarter comebacks this season with four. Coach Ben Johnson said he doesn’t notice a change in his quarterback’s demeanor in late-game situations, but he believes Williams is confident and comfortable in them.

“I don’t know, that’s a question you can ask him, if he changes over the course of the game,” Johnson said. “I don’t notice any difference in terms of behavior or lateral communication. I think he’s been pretty consistent staying focused and focused and trying to execute whatever comes his way.
“In those particular cases, you’re in a slower passing mode. I don’t want to say I have a higher comfort level there, but it’s still where he’s probably had most of his snaps in high school and college and now in the NFL. There’s probably a little bit of, okay, this is my wheelhouse. I know we’re going to throw it and the defense knows we’re going to throw it, and I can still go ahead and make a play. There may be something to do with that.”
Williams has elevated his game in multiple ways in his first year working with Johnson, and in doing so, the Bears are having much more success this season compared to last. It would be a lot less stressful if the Bears weren’t involved in last-minute comebacks, but they’ve shown the ability to do so in many ways when it comes down to it.
