CARBONDALE, KANSAS — Four law enforcement officers were shot and killed Saturday morning while responding to a residence in a rural area south of Topeka, Kansas.
The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m., and three Osage County sheriff’s deputies and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper were shot, said Melissa Underwood, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Their circumstances “remain very fluid,” Underwood said.
Leaders from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the State Highway Patrol said one of the suspects died from his injuries. Another man was injured and taken to hospital in stable condition, officials said.
Deputies and troopers were responding to a domestic violence incident north of Carbondale. They were at the scene for several minutes when gunfire erupted, authorities said.
Multiple law enforcement agencies immediately responded to the call of shots fired, officials said.
The location of the shooting is a house located on a two-lane road that extends into Topeka. Authorities closed the road about six-tenths of a mile south of there.
The area of ​​the shooting is a rural area near U.S. Interstate 75. Underwood said there is no active threat to the public.
