After Everton’s win on Saturday, Maresca went on a rant in his post-match press conference where he said he had just had the “worst 48 hours” since joining Chelsea.

He said he had lacked support, but did not reveal anything else when pressed. Of course, everyone wanted to know more.

The Blues coach doubled down on his comments yesterday at the press conference prior to tonight’s League Cup match. Or at least that’s what we thought.

It appears he was pressed further about his relationship with athletic directors and owners in the embargoed section of the interview that was published last night, and he decided to answer that question.

Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart with Behdad Eghbali.

As quoted by The Evening Standard, when asked how strong his relationship is with Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali and co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, he replied: “It’s okay, it’s good.”

When asked if he’s as good as ever, he added: “I think so, yeah.”

most important figure

Maresca was also asked if he believes the manager is the most important figure at Chelsea or any football club.

“I think it’s the one who puts up the money, not the manager,” he said. “He is the owner. I think they are the most important people in a football club.

“The manager is an important part but not the most important.”
