Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane believes he can surpass the Bundesliga scoring record of 41 goals in a season, but is aware he still has a long way to go.

England captain Kane has 18 goals in his first 14 games and has 20 games left to surpass the mark set by former Munich player Robert Lewandowski in the 2020-21 season.

“Yes, I think it’s possible, especially with the start I’ve had,” Kane told Sky TV in an interview published on Wednesday.

Kane, 32, said he likes chasing records but is aware there is still “a long way” to go and that he will need consistency for many months to challenge Lewandowski, whose record he described as outstanding.

“When March comes we will see if it is really possible,” he said.

Kane was the Bundesliga’s top scorer in his first two seasons at Bayern with 36 and 26 goals respectively.

At the end of September he became the fastest player to reach 100 goals with a club in Europe’s five main leagues, in 104 games since his departure in 2023 from Tottenham Hotspur.

Kane has 114 goals in 120 appearances for Bayern in all competitions heading into their final game of the year, a Bundesliga fixture at Heidenheim on Sunday.

In the interview, Kane also celebrated the upcoming return of playmaker Jamal Musiala, who has been sidelined since July with a broken leg and dislocated ankle.

Musiala has returned to some team training and should get his first minutes in January. Kane said he considered Musiala the best player on the team before the injury.

Kane said he was equally happy to have full-back Alphonso Davies back playing after a serious knee injury, and said it felt like having two valuable new signings in Davies and Musiala.
