For the sixth time in the last eight seasons, these elite Texas programs, one from the Dallas metropolitan area and the other from the Houston metropolitan area, collide for a University Interscholastic League state championship. The latest edition of the Panthers and the Mustangs will take place Saturday afternoon at AT&T Stadium for the 6A Division I championship.

The first time these two superpowers met for a state championship was in 2018, when North Shore earned a 41-36 victory after a dramatic Hail Mary pass late in the game.

North Shore then beat the Panthers the following season, 2019, and again in 2021.

But the Panthers took the lead in 2022 and again in 2023 with a 49-33 victory. Neither team made it to Arlington last season, but both North Shore and Duncanville are back in “Jerry World” with a vengeance.

Duncanville enters Saturday’s game 12-1 overall, with its only loss coming by a single point against Waxahachie in the Panthers’ second game. But the Panthers avenged that loss to Waxahachie with a 35-27 victory two weeks ago in the regional finals; Then, in last week’s semifinals, Duncanville dominated a previously undefeated Allen team, 31-9.

This will be Duncanville’s seventh time in the state title game. Along with titles won in 2022 and again in 2023, the Panthers won in their first championship game appearance, 1998.

North Shore enters Saturday’s game at 13-2. The Mustangs lost in the season opener to South Oak Cliff, which earlier Saturday captured the 5A Division II championship, and then lost in the regular season finale to Humble Summer Creek.

But in the postseason, the Mustangs have leveled up. They have won all five playoff games by an average margin of 25 points, including a 46-29 victory against previously undefeated Dickinson in the regional finals and then a 28-6 victory last week in the semifinals against Lake Travis, which also came in undefeated.

The Mustangs will be making their ninth appearance in a state championship game and seeking their sixth championship.

THIRD QUARTER

– Oh, but wait, they’re reviewing the play and have determined that Bocard didn’t quite come down with the catch as it landed. Still a great catch, though, but a brutal break for North Shore, who now have to punt it for the fifth time today.

– OH WOW, WHAT A LOSE. Third and long for North Shore and Kaleb Maryland throws a deep ball. And Jaylen Bocard goes over two defenders and makes the catch, although he lands quite hard on the grass. Although he gets up again.

– North Shore to get the ball at the start of the second half. The Mustangs will start around 30 after the return.

HALF-TIME

– Duncanville had 167 yards of total offense in the first half (77 rushing, 90 passing). North Shore with 119 total yards (46 rushing, 73 passing). The Panthers had the ball in the red zone twice, but had a pass intercepted and lost it. The Mustangs punted on each of their first four possessions and then took a knee to end the half of their fifth drive.

– For the second time in as many days here at UIL State, we have a scoreless first half. The Stephenville-Kilgore 4A Division I title game on Friday was scoreless at halftime before Stephenville cruised to a 10-0 victory.

SECOND QUARTER

– North Shore takes a knee to end the half. The Mustangs will receive the ball at the beginning of the second half.

– High hit on the punt but Duncanville was able to make it. Ball lands at the North Shore 32 with nine seconds left in the intermission.

– North Shore stops on third down and the Mustangs call their second timeout with 22 seconds left. The rowing situation is approaching.

– Another third down for Duncanville, but the Panthers commit consecutive delay-of-game penalties and now have a third-and-16 with 29 seconds left.

– High shot by J’Coryon Rivers, but Emmanuel Ellison rises high in the air to grab the third down, giving Duncanville a first down near their 45 as the final minute of the half approaches.

– Duncanville takes its final down of the first half as the Panthers face a third-and-5 at their own 35-yard line with 1:21 remaining.

– North Shore forced an incomplete pass on third down, but the Mustangs were simply penalized for holding. That gives Duncanville an automatic first down at their 30 as we hit the two-minute warning.

– Trenton Yancey advances for a first down on a third-down snap. Duncanville now close to the North Shore 20 with less than three minutes left in the half.

– Once again, Duncanville’s defense becomes huge and a promising drive by North Shore ends in another punt. The Mustangs kick it for the fourth time today. The ball lands at the Duncanville 3 with 3:46 left in the first half.

– North Shore quarterback Kaleb Maryland completes a pass on third-and-long, and the Mustangs have a first down near midfield with about six minutes left. Maryland then throws another pass and North Shore closes in on the Duncanville 40 with another first down.

– Duncanville falls short of the first down when Trenton Yancey takes the direct snap and sweeps the left side, but comes up inches short. North Coast takes charge.

– Duncanville faces a fourth-and-four from the North Shore 19 and the Panthers are going for it. But before that, the Panthers take a timeout, the second of the half.

– A deep throw from Panther QB J’Coryon Rivers – and receiver Trenton Yancey is there for a big catch despite being heavily guarded by a North Shore defender. The play goes 42 yards to the Mustang 37.

– North Shore quarterback Kaleb Maryland completes a 20-yard pass to receiver Jaylen Bocard, and the Mustangs have a first down at the Duncanville 40.

– A first down, but nothing more for Duncanville, and the Panthers will punt. Since North Shore’s interception on the opening drive, it’s been nothing but punts. The Mustangs get the ball near their 40 with about three minutes left in the quarter.

– North Shore gets a first down and approaches midfield before Duncanville’s defense stiffens and forces the Mustangs to punt for the second time today. The Panthers take control at their 20 with 5:13 left in the period.

– Duncanville can’t do anything on offense and has to punt it back to North Shore. The Mustangs start inside their own 20.

– North Shore is left without three on its first series and has to punt. Fair Duncanville traps it just inside the midfield stripe, and the Panthers will have excellent field position with nearly three minutes gone in the game.

NORTH COAST INTERCEPTION. Junior defensive back Tony Guillory is there to intercept a pass, denying Duncanville a scoring opportunity, and now the Mustangs get the ball for the first time at their own 16-yard line.

– Duncanville moves quickly on the opening drive as the Panthers are already inside the North Shore 20.

– Here we go from Arlington. The kickoff goes to the end zone for a touchback, and Duncanville will start from its own 25-yard line.
