The Australian Open quarterfinals begin amid a heat wave that has forced the tournament to adjust its schedule and will almost certainly trigger the extreme heat protocol.

The match of the day, between local favorite Alex de Miñaur and top seed Carlos Alcaraz, will be played late into the night and under the roof of the Rod Laver Arena as the tournament prepares for temperatures of up to 46C.

Aryna Sabalenka continues her bid to regain her Australian Open crown against 18-year-old rising star Iva Jovic, while the match between third seed Alexander Zverev and Learner Tien is likely to fall in the hottest part of the afternoon.

The opening match of the night session is another crazy one, as third seed Coco Gauff battles Elina Svitolina, after the Ukrainian star put in a clinical performance to knock out Mirra Andreeva in the fourth round.
