Savannah Guthrie was scheduled to co-host the opening ceremony with Terry Gannon, but NBC said she would no longer travel to Italy due to her mother’s disappearance.
Carrillo is a familiar face to people watching the Olympics — this will be her 17th Olympics — and she will be co-hosting them with Gannon.
NBC said Carrillo lived in Milan for two years as a child. It has hosted the closing ceremonies of three Olympic Games – in Salt Lake City in 2002, Beijing in 2008, and Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
Craig Melvin, co-host of Guthrie’s “Today” show, also will not be going to Italy, NBC said. He was scheduled to host the Olympic Games late at night early next week, and Ahmed Farid will replace him in this role.
