Washington– The US Navy’s most senior uniformed officer wants to persuade commanders to use smaller, newer ships and other assets on missions rather than constantly resorting to massive aircraft carriers — as we’ve now seen in… US military reinforcements off Venezuela and Iran.
Admiral Darryl Caudle’s vision – what he calls it “His combat instructions” – Calls on the Navy to deploy more customized combinations of ships and equipment that would provide the Naval Service with greater flexibility to respond to crises as they develop.
Caudle spoke to The Associated Press before rolling out the new strategy, which comes as the Trump administration did Aircraft carriers and other ships moved to regions around the world to address emerging concerns. This has disrupted existing deployment plans, forced ships to sail thousands of miles, and placed increasing pressure on ships and equipment already facing increasing maintenance problems.
The largest aircraft carrier in the world, USS Gerald R. Ford was redirected Late last year from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, where the crew eventually supported last month’s operation to capture then-Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. And two weeks ago The USS Abraham Lincoln has arrived In the Middle East as tensions rise with Iran, after it was withdrawn from the South China Sea.
In an interview, Caudle said his strategy would make the Navy’s presence in areas like the Caribbean smaller and better designed to confront actual threats.
He said he had already spoken to Commander, US Southern CommandWhich includes the Caribbean and Venezuela, “as we negotiate what his problem is – I want to be able to convey that I can address that with a tailored package there.”
Speaking broadly, Caudle said he envisioned the mission in the Caribbean to focus more on interdiction and monitoring of commercial shipping.
The US Army has Multiple already busted Suspicious and false flagged Tankers associated with Venezuela Which was part of a global shadow fleet of merchant ships that helped governments evade sanctions.
“This doesn’t really require an aircraft carrier group to do this,” Caudle said, adding that he believes the mission can be carried out using some smaller littoral combat ships, Navy helicopters and close coordination with the Coast Guard.
The Navy has had 11 ships, including the Ford and several amphibious assault ships with thousands of Marines, in South American waters for months. It’s a major shift for a region that has historically seen the deployment of one or two small Navy ships.
“I don’t want a lot of destroyers wandering around there just running radar to get awareness of robotic ships and other carriers coming out of port,” Caudle said. “She’s really not a good match for the job.”
To compensate, Caudle envisions relying more heavily on drones or other automated systems to provide military commanders with the same capabilities but with a lower investment than Navy ships. He admits this won’t be an easy sale.
Even if a leader is aware of a new capability, employees “may not know how to ask for it, integrate it, and know how to employ it in an effective way to achieve this new specialized capability,” Caudle said.
He later added: “This requires an education campaign here.”
President Donald Trump has favored big, bold responses from the Navy and is leaning heavily toward a show of firepower.
Trump has referred to aircraft carriers and their accompanying destroyers as armadas and flotillas. He also revived historicism Title of a warship for the planned ship type That would contain hypersonic missiles, nuclear cruise missiles, rail guns, and high-energy lasers.
If built, the proposed “Trump-class battleship” would be longer and larger than the World War II-era Iowa-class battleships, though the Navy has not only struggled to use some of the technology Trump says it will be on board, but has faced challenges building smaller, less advanced ships on time and on budget.
Given this trend, Caudle said that if Lincoln were recently redeployed to the Middle East under his new plan, he would talk with the Indo-Pacific commander about how to make up for the loss.
“So, with Abraham Lincoln out, I have a three-ship (set) that will make up for that,” Caudle suggested as an example.
Caudle says his vision has already been up and running in Europe and North America “for the past four or five years.”
This could soon apply to the Bering Strait, which separates Russia and Alaska, he said, noting that “the importance of the Arctic continues to spread more and more” as China, Russia and the United States prioritize the region.
Trump was martyred The threat from China and Russia In his country Demands the seizure of GreenlandThe Arctic island is controlled by Denmark, a NATO ally.
Caudle said he knew he needed to provide “more solutions” to commanders in that region and that his “dedicated force packages would be a way to achieve that.”
