What’s stopping the Minnesota Vikings from making the playoffs?

That the Minnesota Vikings missed the playoffs after a 14-3 season wasn’t on their bingo card or the fans’ cards. As a result, people will be a little angry heading into 2026, especially after watching Sam Darnold win a Super Bowl immediately after the team decided not to re-sign him and stick with JJ McCarthy.

However, with so many questions lingering about the quarterback and roster, can the Vikings really make it back to the playoffs? ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler talked about all the teams that missed the playoffs, including the Vikings, and offered suggestions as to why they will or won’t make the playoffs in 2026.

For the argument that they won’t make the playoffs again, it all starts with the quarterback position.

He writes: “The quarterback position still being a big question entering the fifth season of this regime is concerning. It appears Minnesota will add a veteran to compete with JJ McCarthy. Several starters on the bench have resurrected their careers recently, including Sam Darnold with this franchise, and Minnesota offers a stable environment. But this is the only area holding the team back in a major way. That and an offensive line that couldn’t stay healthy.”

Hitting the offensive line is also important here for those who want to defend JJ McCarthy. The offensive line took a hit in 2025, and backups like Justin Skule and Blake Brandel had their moments, but never replaced high-profile players who were injured. Keeping them healthy will not only help the team get a good evaluation from McCarthy, but will also be a big part of whether or not they make the playoffs.
