Karim Adeyemi has had little playing time for Borussia Dortmund recently, having made brief appearances off the bench in their last two games against Mainz and Atalanta.

According to former Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller, the 24-year-old needs to improve his game.

“Right now he mainly comes off the bench and I have to say that I would like Karim to not only make a difference on paper, but also on the field. At the moment he is not in top form and when he comes on he loses too many balls,” said Weidenfeller on the Sky program “Triple – der Hagedorn-Fussballtalk”.

If Adeyemi’s slide continues, he risks missing out on the German World Cup squad.

“If he doesn’t play, he won’t go to the World Cup either. You shouldn’t take anyone to the World Cup if they don’t play for their club,” said the 2014 World Cup winner.

Overall, however, Weidenfeller is pleased with Dortmund’s recent performances, with his former club just six points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich heading into next week’s clash.

But first BVB face a demanding away match against RB Leipzig on Saturday, and Weidenfeller says a victory could spark a real title race.”

“If Borussia Dortmund plays now in Leipzig, we will definitely have (a title race) again,” he said.

“It’s a match that will change the rules of the game. If Dortmund can beat RB Leipzig away from home, we can also do it at home against Bayern. The stadium will be on fire. Anything is possible. And I predict a home victory against Bayern.”
