LONDON (AP) — The Premier League will launch a Netflix-style direct-to-customer streaming platform starting next season, chief executive Richard Masters said Thursday.

Premier League Plus will initially launch in Singapore and, if successful, could be “replicated around the world”.

“It’s a very long, carefully considered and chosen process,” Masters told the Financial Times Football Business Summit in London. “For the first time, the Premier League will have its own customers. It will have to deal with promotion, pricing, rotation, distribution, all those things, we are looking to build a business.

“We’re also looking to learn, see how this could be replicated around the world.”

The new platform could eventually transform the way fans consume the world’s most popular league, which claims to have a global audience of 1.87 billion people and be watched in 189 countries.

It has long been rumored that the league would launch a “Premflix” platform. Until now, it had always sold its rights to independent broadcasters such as Sky Sports in England and NBC in the United States.

It is also opening a new Premier League Studios production center in London.

“What we do with Premier League Plus in Singapore is really learn and develop the business,” Masters said. “If it goes well, it can be replicated. I think at this stage it is not advisable to predict beyond that.”
