“Carrick has to get the job”: Rooney backs his former teammate as Man United beat Villa to strengthen Champions League push

Wayne Rooney has said Michael Carrick “has to get the job” at Manchester United following his performances as caretaker manager.

Carrick led Manchester United to a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday to cement the club’s position in the Champions League places.

Goals from Casemiro, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko secured a spectacular victory, a result that puts the Red Devils six points ahead of Chelsea in sixth place.

An excellent period continues for the interim coach since he replaced Rubén Amorim. United have won seven of their nine games in charge in all competitions and have lost just one. That run has included wins over each of the other three teams in the Premier League’s top four.

Former Manchester United captain Rooney, who played alongside Carrick for more than a decade, has backed his former team-mate for the full-time role.

He questioned why the club would change a winning formula, given the 44-year-old’s immediate impact.

“I 100% should (get the job). I’ve said this. I knew this was going to happen with Michael Carrick,” Rooney told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I know him very well. I know his character, his personality. A calm head was needed, but someone who knew the place and the players needed some love, and he gave it to them.

“We have seen the players play with more quality, more together as a team, and they seem like a very strong team. For me, why would you change?

“He has the best winning percentage of any Manchester United manager after so many games. For me, he has to get the job.”
