The first week of NFL free agency is now in the books. The Arizona Cardinals have been active, although they haven’t made any really significant moves like they did last offseason. It’s time to start qualifying your initial moves.

We don’t know how they will actually perform as the season is still months away, but based on need, fit, and value, we can give initial ratings.

Let’s look at safety Andrew Wingard.

Rating of the Cardinals’ signing of Andrew Wingard

Grade: C

Wingard is a decent addition to the secondary. With Jalen Thompson leaving in free agency for the Dallas Cowboys, the Cardinals needed a replacement. Wingard could end up being the team’s third safety, the role Rabbit Taylor-Demerson filled last year, playing behind Taylor-Demerson. Wingard could keep Rabbit in that same role, simply replacing Thompson.

He was a full-time starter last season and had one interception and nine pass deflections. He had 84 tackles and played on the back end of a great defense the Jacksonville Jaguars had.

He had some issues in coverage but is good in run support. His contract is good and he is reportedly worth $3 million.

It’s not a bad signing. It is not a very good signing. He’s a decent player who fills a need the Cardinals had.
