Premier League club Chelsea FC lost £264 million ($359 million at current exchange rates) during the 2024-25 season, the club reported Wednesday, a record pre-tax loss for an EPL team, surpassing Manchester City’s deficit during the 2010-11 season.

Chelsea now have four of the six biggest defeats in EPL history, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

The 2024-25 loss compares with a profit of £128.4 million ($171 million) the previous year. However, that figure was skewed as it included proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club Women Ltd to Blueco 22 Midco Limited for $257 million. Basically, Chelsea owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital sold the women’s team and the deal helped the team comply with the EPL’s financial fair play rules.

The previous year, Chelsea sold a pair of hotels to a related company for $101 million to meet profitability and sustainability standards.

During the 24-25 season, Chelsea’s men’s team finished fourth in the Premier League, qualified for the Champions League and won both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Chelsea’s revenue for the 2024-25 season increased 5% to $653 million, largely driven by higher broadcast revenue from the team’s fourth-place finish in the Premier League and the team’s participation in and victory in the Club World Cup. It marked Chelsea’s second-highest earnings of all time.

Matchday revenue increased 8% to $115 million, and player sales revenue was $77 million.

The women’s team won a record eighth WSL title during the 2024-25 season, and revenue soared approximately 85% to $28 million, driven primarily by increased sponsorships. However, costs also increased, causing a total loss of $23 million.

The current season has been difficult as the men’s team fired coach Enzo Maresca in January, and the team sits sixth in the EPL table. Chelsea’s women’s team is second in the standings, but has just seen the sudden departure of Paul Green, the executive widely credited with turning the team into a WSL giant.
