The New Jersey Devils star smiled during the game, showing off his new pearly whites after more than a month with broken teeth from the United States’ gold medal game at the 2026 Milan Games. Hughes’ bloody mouth instantly became an iconic moment at the Olympics, after the NHL star took a stick to the mouth from a Team Canada player just minutes before winning the game, and the United States’ first gold since 1980, with his goal in extra time.

Hughes had told Jimmy Fallon in February that he would have his teeth removed as soon as possible, after the host asked the NHL star if he planned to make broken teeth “his thing.” Hughes responded, during his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallonthat “I can promise you that this will not be my thing.”

The hockey star explained to Fallon that it was difficult to find time for dental work between celebrating his gold medal and playing for the Devils.

Hughes said he was especially excited to throw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium on the opening day of the team’s season. “And then Opening Day, wow! This is almost too much, it’s too much pressure! But it’s too much fun, and that’s for both of us,” he told NJ.com, alongside Frankel.

Hughes also said he has been practicing for weeks at the moment, according to the outlet. “My coach brought gloves and I threw like 50 pitches right before I skated in the morning, and my shoulder was really hurting,” Hughes said. “I thought, ‘We’ve got to cool it down.’”
