Sales of Rivian Automotive Inc. fell consecutively for 4 months in the US as the electric car maker prepares to launch the long-awaited R2 Crossover SUV.

Rivian’s first-quarter sales fell more than 26.5% year-over-year, as the company sold 8,141 vehicles in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the 11,070 units it delivered last year, according to a report from Electric Vehicles on Wednesday. During March, Rivian sold 2,925 units, a decrease of almost 1,000 units from the 3,910 units it sold in March 2025.

Rivian sold more than 2,516 units in January and more than 2,700 vehicles in February, and the report says the electric vehicle maker’s sales fell to a new three-year low. The decline in sales began in December of last year.

The news comes as Rivian’s R2 crossover SUV aims to boost the company’s sales. Rivian currently offers the R1S and R1T in its lineup, which are premium vehicles priced over $70,000.

According to Rivian’s forecasts for 2026 deliveries, the automaker expects between 62,000 and 67,000 vehicles in total. Of that figure, the company expects to sell between 20,000 and 25,000 R2 vehicles. The standard version of the R2, which will arrive next year, will be priced at $48,490.

The company also signed a $1.25 billion deal with Uber Technologies Inc.in which the ride-hailing platform will invest in the automaker until 2031, with the goal of deploying several thousand R2 Robotaxis in several cities by 2031.

The automaker also unveiled its Universal hands-free assisted driving system that the company says can travel on more than 3.5 million miles of highways in the U.S. and Canada where lanes are clearly marked.
