United Petfood entered Canada by acquiring a production facility in Quebec from local peer Legault Group.

In a brief statement, United Petfood described the deal as a “historic moment.” Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Drummondville site, which manufactures dry pet food, began operations in 2023.

United Petfood Group CEO Dries Eeckhout said: “The factory is very well invested with the latest pet food production technology and offers scope for further expansion. We continue to see exciting growth opportunities both in the Canadian market and internationally.”

Two years ago, Belgium-based United Petfood entered the United States by acquiring a plant in Indiana.

Just food has contacted the Legault family group for comment. The company also owns wet pet food manufacturer Food 4 Pets Canada and pet store chains Mondou and Ren’s Pets.

United Petfood’s move to Canada is the second acquisition the company has announced in a week.

The company also partnered with Turkish partner Lider Petfood and purchased a dry pet food factory in the country.

The companies said the facility in the western Turkish city of Kırklareli would help meet “growing” domestic and international demand and serve as a “gateway” to Eastern Europe.

Private label supplier United Petfood produces wet and dry pet foods, biscuits and snacks for dogs and cats.

The group operates production facilities throughout Europe, including the United Kingdom, France and Poland. It exports to more than 110 countries and employs more than 3,500 people.

“United Petfood Enters Canada” was created and originally published by Just Food, a brand owned by GlobalData.
