Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has dismissed suggestions that he has not received enough credit for the franchise’s success and has instead chosen to highlight the contributions of the players and captain MS Dhoni to the franchise’s success.
Fleming, who has been at the helm since 2009 after appearing as a player in the inaugural IPL season, has overseen one of the most successful eras in franchise cricket. Under his leadership, CSK has lifted five IPL titles and two Champions League trophies. However, after a series of disappointing performances in IPL 2026, his role has come under scrutiny. Faced with criticism ahead of CSK’s fourth match of the season, still seeking its first win, Fleming stood firm.
“It’s all about the players really,” Fleming said ahead of CSK’s fourth clash of the IPL 2026 season as they seek their first win.
Furthermore, he acknowledged Dhoni’s influence and considered himself lucky to have worked alongside one of the greatest leaders of the game.
“For me, it just gives us another year of training. And it’s always been that way. Players do it. Off-field training is really important, but on-field performances win titles. And, yes, we play a role in the fitness of the players, the performance of the players, the mental state of the players, but ultimately, coaches are judged by the players. I’ve worked with one of the greatest captains of all time, and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to do that as a coach. So, look, it’s not lost on me and I’m proud of the results, but it’s not something I look forward to or want to receive praise for.” he added.

Fleming also rejected claims that his training methods in T20 cricket have become outdated. While he accepted that results have not been in CSK’s favor recently, he emphasized their continued involvement in global leagues. Currently associated with the Super Kings franchises in multiple tournaments, Fleming said his year-round training and player analysis keeps him deeply connected to the changing nature of T20 cricket.
“Criticism is fair when you don’t do well; that’s part of the job, that’s part of the position. Look, I’m training all year round and in two other competitions, and I’m doing auctions with a lot of players. So it’s not like I just fizzle out and then come to the IPL without having an idea of where the game is going. In fact, it’s the other way around.” he admitted.
He noted that CSK’s current transition phase, with several new players in the team, has required time to adapt, something that other teams may not be facing to the same extent.
“We just need a little confidence and evidence, which comes from winning. We haven’t been far away.”
Referencing their previous outing, Fleming noted that despite posting a solid total of 210, the execution with the ball at the death cost them the game.
“We weren’t as accurate with the ball towards the end, but we still managed 210. So, look, it’s a very good sign that we’re working very hard and we’re very aware, I am, and the criticism is appropriate.” So we just have to work harder and find a way to move forward. But I feel in touch with the game,” Fleming said.
Fleming praises Dewald Brevis and keeps the selection call open
Fleming also praised young South African talent Dewald Brevis, although he was non-committal about his availability for the upcoming clash against Delhi Capitals.
“I think having developed his game at such a young age, he obviously had opportunities early and then missed them while he was deciding how he wanted to play. I’m sure there was a lot of advice during that time, but now he’s come out of that cycle with real clarity as to the way he wants to play. He’s aggressive, he’s very skilled and he’s becoming consistent. So we really value his input. It’s been a big mistake since the beginning of the season. So, if he’s right for this game, he’ll be a good addition.” he concluded.
