The gardener of the Cardinals of San Luis, Lars Nootbaar, welcomed the news that the automated MLB ball (ABS) system will be completely implemented in 2026. Known as one of the most disciplined batters in the League, Nootbaar could be among the biggest beneficiaries.
The numbers support that. Last season, Nootbaar was classified as the 100.9% Persecution rate with only 16.9% and in the period of walking rate with 12.8%. His elite area conscience allows him to be highly selective, he rarely pursues out of the Strike area. At its best, Nootbaar punishes good releases or draws walks.
Looking towards the future, Nootbaar told Athletics that the ability to challenge calls could change their approach, particularly with two attacks.
“With two attacks, I think that most batters expand because we are worried about hitting, but neither do you want the call to be in the hands of the referee,” said Nootbaar. “So now you can trust your eyes, and if it is not on your way, then at least you have something to challenge. I still think there is a place for the referees in this game. But this could have a domino effect, where, if you feel good as a batter, and then you get a challenge, suddenly something big can happen. I am excited about it.”
The key phrase, “trust your eyes,” emphasizes why Nootbaar is so well positioned for the ABS time. With some of the best plate disciplines in baseball, the cardinal of the cardinals could see their strengths amplified once the new system is in place.
