The New York Mets have certainly learned to disappoint their fans over time.

They are doing it in a pretty painful way so far at the start of the 2026 MLB season.
They’ve already had four different hitters go on streaks of at least 0 for 17 in a row.
Two of the streaks are active:
-
Mark Vientos has 0 in his last 23.
-
Brett Baty has 0 in his last 17.
Earlier this season, rookie Carson Benge went on an 0-24 run.
FURTHER: Warriors’ generational mistake may have cost Steph Curry
Marcus Semien also went on an 0-20 run early in the season.
Anthony DiComo of MLB.com writes that “no other team has had four players with hitless streaks of that length this season.”

This would be a pretty difficult problem if it were only one or two who were fighting.
But it’s almost half of the Mets’ batting lineup that has already found itself in a major crisis this season.
New York still has time to get several guys on good streaks at once instead of bad streaks.
But at least right now, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more depressing hitting statistic than this one.
