Flint, Michigan– A man in michigan got married and then He ran over his best friend On the same day, he was killed, after an altercation over alcohol, and was sentenced on Monday to at least 30 years in prison.
“The only thing I can do for the rest of my life is express my apology and remorse,” James Shirah said in Genesee District Court. “I will forever be sorry.”
Schirra, 24, was driving when his car collided with Terry Taylor Jr. in Flint, about an hour’s drive northwest of Detroit, on Aug. 30, 2024. He and Savannah Collier were married earlier that day and the celebration moved to a house.
Shira’s lawyer said that the accident was not intentional. But prosecutors said Schirra left the scene and had time to think before returning and striking Taylor. MLive.com reported.
“Mr. Shirah, I believe you are not a criminal. However, you are a murderer,” Judge Khary Hannibal said.
In April, Shirah pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and other crimes. He will be eligible for parole after 30 years.
“I hope they throw the book at you,” Erin Taylor, Taylor’s cousin, said before Shirah received his sentence.
Shira’s wife is scheduled to be sentenced later in May on the accessory charge.
