Punjab Kings won a crucial toss in their must-win IPL 2026 clash against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium and elected to play first as they try to keep their dwindling playoff hopes alive.
PBKS come into the contest under immense pressure after six straight losses completely derailed what once looked like a top-two campaign. On April 25, Punjab were comfortably sitting at the top of the table with 13 points from seven matches, but a dramatic drop in form has pushed them into a desperate fight for survival.
Captain Shreyas Iyer admitted how much was at stake surrounding the competition after opting to chase.
"First we will bowl. Two changes: Marco and Vyshak enter. The feeling is exciting, I would say it is a life or death match for us. We have never been in this situation before and the boys are waiting to give their best."
Punjab’s qualification equation remains complicated. Not only do they need a win tonight, preferably by a convincing margin, but they also need favorable results elsewhere, including dropped points from Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders who failed to significantly improve their net run rate.
For Lucknow, the season is already over but captain Rishabh Pant said his team still wants to finish strong despite a difficult campaign.
"We would have also bowled first. This wicket is good for cricket, irrespective of whether you are bowling or batting. This is one of the best batting wickets, could be a high scoring match. Two changes: Arjun and Arshin Kulkarni. It has been a difficult season, but at the same time a lot has been learned, both for the team and personally. I would say I feel sorry for the fans, they have come from all over UP. It has been hard for us, but today we will give our 100%."
Lucknow has also been hit hard by availability issues with Mitchell Marsh missing tonight’s match along with overseas players Aiden Markram, Matthew Breetzke and Anrich Nortje, who were already absent. Marsh’s absence is particularly significant considering the Australian opener has scored 563 runs this season and formed a destructive opening partnership with Josh Inglis in the last few games.
Equipment:
Lucknow Supergiants (Playing XI): Josh Inglis, Arshin Kulkarni, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Rishabh Pant (w/c), Abdul Samad, Mukul Choudhary, Arjun Tendulkar, Mohammed Shami, Prince Yadav, Mohsin Khan

With Punjab’s season hanging in the balance and Lucknow looking to end on a positive note, there is a lot at stake in Match 68 of IPL 2026.
