It is well known that the Detroit Tigers are having a bad season in 2026 so far. They are last in the American League Central Division, Tarik Skubal is injured and they could be sellers before the August 3 trade deadline.
However, there is more bad news for the Tigers regarding an injured All-Star, although it has nothing to do with Skubal.
According to Jason Beck of MLB.com, AJ Hinch revealed some worrying news about Javier Báez amid his recovery from his ankle injury. It may be a little while before Báez returns.

"Javy Báez will see a specialist for his right ankle injury, which has not progressed as expected, according to manager AJ Hinch." Beck reports.
Báez landed on the Tigers’ injured list in April due to a sprained right ankle. He has been recovering since then, but now this is a worrying update.
In Florida, Báez has been working on his recovery, making progress running and hitting. But this update indicates that things are not going very well and that he could be out for a while longer.

He’s been out since April 29, and the way things look like he’ll miss well into June of this season.
The 33-year-old veteran and All-Star infielder had a .256 batting average with two home runs and six RBIs in 24 games in 78 at-bats with a .677 OPS before landing on the disabled list.
After this injury update, it’s clear that Báez will be out for a while longer. It’s a tough blow for the Tigers as the season begins to wind down as summer approaches.
