The Liverpool legend spoke to Rio Ferdinand on his podcast, Rio Ferdinand Presents, and discussed the current era of football and how it has changed since his Premier League era.
Gerrard described the difference between football generations saying: “I’m not sure they can respect me as well as they respected me during my career in today’s game. I think it has changed, it is more of a technical, more tactical game.
“The rules of the game have moved and evolved. Tackling, leaving a stamp, the physicality, it’s a friendlier atmosphere, it’s a safer game.
“I like the football of the previous generation, that’s me, but that’s the generation I played in. Now it’s a little more technical, you can get cautioned and leave a football field for nothing.”
Gerrard admitted he wasn’t sure he qualified as one of the best, but backed United legend and England team-mate Paul Scholes to be the Premier League’s best midfielder.

Why does Gerrard think Scholes is one of the best?
Gerrard said: “I think now, without a doubt, he (Scholes) would be the best midfielder in the Premier League.
“Scholesy, for me, was very much a possession controller of a one-game midfielder, he can change the play, you get close and he can move you, he can play with the outside of his foot, score important goals, make the last pass.
“What for me was, if you can get him to the other side of the game, if you can get him to the other side, if you can do something physical with him, he will be booked against you. “I’m not sure that in today’s game you can leave one for Scholesy, for example.
“He would have terrified everyone in the Premier League. I’m telling you right now, he would have terrified everyone in the Premier League now.
“He would be the best midfielder in the Premier League, without a doubt.”
Scholes played 716 games for Manchester United, scoring 155 goals and assisting 82 goals in that time.
