South Africa’s captain predicts the future of his team.
Ronwen Williams opens up about Benin vs Nigeria clash!
With the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaching its climax, the hopes of a nation rest on the shoulders of Bafana Bafana and its captain, Ronwen Williams. As the team prepares for a decisive final qualifying match against Rwanda, the goalkeeper opened up about high-risk permutations and looked confidently at the fate of his rivals.
The mission is clear: secure a victory against Rwanda and secure a ticket to the global tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. This urgency was magnified after Bafana Bafana’s recent stumble, failing to pick up three points against Zimbabwe. That unexpected result allowed Benin (who now sit top of Group C after a 1-0 win over Rwanda) to extend their lead, tightening the race.
However, within the South African side a feeling of faith prevails, defended by its captain. Williams acknowledges the shift in public sentiment, but remains an unwavering optimist.
“People will have doubts now, but if you look back, a month ago, it seemed like everything was clear for us to qualify.” the Bafana captain revealed in a conversation with the team’s media. “I still feel like everything is going in our favor. I believe in fairy tales.”
He then drew a parallel to a poignant moment from the past, adding a layer of destiny to his next challenge. “If I remember correctly, 12 years ago we had our calculators in Mbombela, where we are heading now, and maybe we are going to correct the mistakes of that time.”
Williams’ optimism extends to the group’s other crucial match, where Nigeria will host Benin. He shared his prediction with conviction and stated: “So I am positive, I have faith and all the results were in our favour. Now it is up to Nigeria to play against Benin, and I don’t see Benin getting results in Nigeria. It is just up to us to do the job as well.”
The next match is more than just a qualifier; It is an opportunity for redemption. Rwanda remains the only team to have defeated Bafana Bafana in this qualifying campaign, a fact that fuels the team’s motivation. Ending his rallying cry, Williams sent a heartfelt message to his followers, urging: “We know how important that game (against) Rwanda is going to be, and we have a score to settle with Rwanda. There is a lot of motivation behind this game; they are the only team that beat us in the qualifiers. The nation must not lose hope, support the boys and keep sending positive messages, and maybe things will get in our way.”
