Slovenia earned a valuable point in their World Cup qualifying campaign after drawing goalless with Switzerland in Ljubljana on Monday night, with Leeds United defender Jaka Bijol playing a key role during the 90 minutes.
The 26-year-old centre-back produced another composed performance at the heart of the Slovenian defence, taking 47 touches and completing 28 passes with an impressive 85% accuracy rate.
Bijol was heavily involved in keeping Switzerland’s attack at bay, recording 10 defensive contributions, including four interceptions, two clearances, two recoveries and two vital blocks. He also emerged victorious in two duels while having the task of keeping Rennes’ Breel Embolo calm throughout the match.
Slovenia’s disciplined defensive structure frustrated the visitors at every turn, ensuring Matjaž Kek’s team remained in contention for a place in the play-offs for next year’s World Cup.
