Surtain limited Chase to one reception for eight yards, Brown to four receptions for 40 yards and Wilson to one reception for four yards. He lines up at the opposing team’s WR1 each week and continues to limit big plays.
“I accept that challenge,” Surtain said. “I just go up against the best every week. I don’t take it lightly. Every week during preparation I always focus on the technical side of things. Trying new things, trying to affect their game and just going out there and doing what I do at the end of the day. My coaches and my teammates believe in me to do that.”
Like Chase a few weeks ago, Wilson expressed his frustration on the sideline during Sunday’s game against Surtain. The cornerback revealed after the game that Wilson apparently played through an injury.
“It’s hard to get into a rhythm, obviously, with the pressure we generate and the coverage we have,” Surtain said. “But I saw instances where he was a little hurt and throughout the game it looked like he was clutching his ribs or something. But yeah, I think collectively as a unit, we tried to create pressure and frustration among their best players.”
Surtain won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award in 2024 and would likely be the favorite again in 2025 if not for the impressive play of teammate Nik Bonitto, who is on pace to break the NFL’s single-season sack record this fall. Surtain blocking top receivers and forcing quarterbacks to hold the ball helps the team’s pass rushers, and his quick pressure helps shorten PS2’s coverage time. The Broncos have one of the best defenses in the NFL, led by the elite play of Surtain and Bonitto.
