Arnold Schwarzenegger shared his two cents about Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 50 measure on “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday night, where he criticized the policy measure as “a big scam.”
The actor, who served as California’s 38th governor between 2003 and 2011, made it clear that he was not a supporter of Newsom’s measure, which will authorize temporary changes to the state’s electoral district maps, directly combating similar actions being carried out in Texas.
While Newsom has touted Proposition 50 as a way to prevent President Donald Trump and the Republican Party from “rigging the next election,” Schwarzenegger accused it as evidence of unethical “gerrymandering” in current politics.
“Do you know who I want to win? The people,” he said. “The people have to win. Look, I’m a Republican, but I’m not a Republican pirate. I’m not a political pirate. I don’t serve the party, I always serve the people. The people come first.”
As it moved forward, Schwarzenegger warned voters against “taking power away from the people in California” and “giving it back to the politicians” through Proposition 50.
He added: “We fought that for too long. Let’s not do that. Let’s be a good example. Let the Democrats outperform the Republicans and therefore, because of their performance, win and take back the House.”
Schwarzenegger later shared how he would go about “saving democracy,” including a suggestion of making Election Day a holiday, independent Redistricting Commissions in each state, and implementing “voter ID.” According to “The Terminator” star, these are all strategies used in Europe.
“We need to go talk to each other, instead of hating each other,” he continued. “Because that’s what people want and that’s what people need.”
