Injuries alter Liverpool’s rhythm
Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Anfield caused more than frustration on the pitch: it gave Arne Slot another headache. Ryan Gravenberch, who just returned to the starting lineup alongside Alexis Mac Allister, was taken off early in the second half after twisting his ankle in a challenge with Bryan Mbeumo.
Gravenberch managed to leave without help, but his discomfort was evident. With Wataru Endo no longer available, Slot now faces a midfield dilemma at the worst possible time.
Slot offers cautious Gravenberch update
Speaking after the match, Slot admitted that the Dutchman is unlikely to feature in midweek.
“I took him out because he sprained his ankle,” Slot said. “Is it an injury problem? That’s what we have to wait and see tomorrow, but we have to play again in two days.”
“We have to play three games in seven days, like we had to do after the last international break. There is not much time for the players to recover, but the good thing is that we have more than one good midfielder.”
Liverpool travel to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday and Slot will now be forced to re-evaluate his set-up, having switched to a more aggressive formation following the departure of Gravenberch, with Florian Wirtz and Curtis Jones taking over central duties.
Missed opportunities overshadow officiating frustration
Mac Allister also suffered a head injury just before Mbeumo’s first match. Referee Michael Oliver signaled for play to continue, causing Slot to become irritated, although he stopped short of blaming the referee for the loss.
“We could have done a lot better after Macca was on the court, we should have done better,” Slot said. “But a player’s health is an important thing and if a player needs four stitches, hopefully everyone will understand that he needs immediate treatment.
“But it didn’t happen. But, again, we could have done better, so that’s not the reason we lost this game today, but because we lost too many opportunities to win a football game.”
Pressure mounts on slots game plan
The result marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive home defeat to United, a sequence not seen since 2014. Criticism quickly followed, with some questioning Slot’s tactical approach, calling it “unfathomable” as Ruben Amorim reeled off back-to-back league victories.
Liverpool now sit four points behind Arsenal and the narrative in some quarters suggests the title race has already slipped out of their hands. Whether fair or premature, Slot’s immediate focus will be on ensuring Gravenberch recovers quickly, because without him his options are significantly reduced.
