Vlasic has become a quality defenseman in the NHL. He has taken on more and more responsibility with each passing season. And he has shown the ability to contribute on the penalty kill. Despite being only 24 years old, he is a leader in the locker room. This was evident Sunday when he wore an A on his sweater as an alternate captain against the Anaheim Ducks.
It’s a great honor, especially for a player his age. Added to this is his connection to the Blackhawks franchise. He grew up in the Chicago suburbs and followed the team as he grew up. All of that made this decision that much more surreal. Still, he remained quite humble when talking about it.
“It’s a little strange, honestly. The first thing I noticed when I went to games and saw guys like Keith, Seabrook, Sharp, Kaner, all these guys wearing the A’s, it’s a little crazy to think that kids come to games and look at me the same way,” the Blackhawks defenseman said, via reporter Charlie Roumeliotis.
“I don’t feel as good or as much of a leader compared to those guys, but it’s definitely a pinch-me moment. I’m very grateful for that. It’s a really cool opportunity.”
Vlasic did not score a point against the Ducks on Sunday night. However, he played an important role in their victory. He skated a little over 24 minutes on ice against Anaheim. He blocked four shots and had two hits in a 2-1 overtime victory.
The Blackhawks have shown promise early in the season. Vlasic is one of the main reasons Chicago has had big wins. It seems that he is becoming a complete player and an important presence in the locker room this season.
