Manchester United is once again the subject of acquisition rumors.
Ineos
The chemical company owned by British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe finally defeated Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, a Qatari banker, in December 2023 for partial control of the club.
However, although Ratcliffe makes the decisions on the football side, he only owns 28.94% of the club.
Therefore, the Glazer family still owns the majority of the club, although they have taken a backseat to football operations.
This means they could technically still sell United to someone other than Ineos if they wish and there has been a flurry of rumors about potential buyers.
The offer from the United Arab Emirates
Last week it was revealed that a group from the United Arab Emirates was interested in buying the football club.
Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that “the international holding company or IHC, which has been around for around three decades, has been part of talks to draw up a prospect for a consortium based in the United Arab Emirates.”
It was also suggested that legend Eric Cantona had been approached to play the role of ambassador for the bid.
David Beckham approached
The Sun reports that “David Beckham has been approached by a group of UAE billionaires as they prepare a bid to buy Manchester United, according to sensational reports.”
It is alleged that “an unknown consortium of investors from the United Arab Emirates are planning to make a bid for the shares controlled by United’s majority owners, the Glazers.”
What’s more, “they have approached the six-time Premier League champion and Treble winner to see if he would be willing to become an ambassador for the bid.”
Wayne Rooney and Eric Cantona are also said to be of interest, but Beckham’s worldwide fame makes him the favourite.
The former England international has a net worth of £300 million and already owns Salford City and Inter Miami.
