GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Green Bay East High School football coach Kominiko “Niko” Silas has been placed on administrative leave, the Green Bay Area Public School District confirmed.

In a letter to students and staff, Superintendent Vicki Bayer said the district cannot provide additional information as this is a personnel matter.

“We fully respect and understand that community members wish to express their views after learning of Silas’ departure,” Bayer wrote. “The Green Bay Area Public School District is committed to ensuring that all employees are treated fairly and that investigations are conducted thoroughly and without bias. We care deeply about the voices of our community and appreciate the understanding that we cannot engage in conversations on this topic in order to honor the confidentiality and integrity of the process.”

The district also acknowledged that some students are experiencing strong emotions regarding Silas’ absence. On Monday, a school-wide announcement encouraged students to talk to social workers, counselors or school administrators about their feelings. Principal Lipp also reminded students that Code of Conduct rules still apply if they participate in a protest during the school day, and emphasized that the announcement was not intended to discourage peaceful protests.

The students who participated in Monday’s protest did so peacefully and did not disrupt the learning of others.
