An active-duty U.S. Marine has been arrested for kidnapping a 12-year-old Indiana girl with the intent to sexually assault her, the FBI announced Thursday.

The FBI said in a statement that William Richard Roy (24 years old), who was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, flew to Chicago last week and met the girl in a park, then took her to a hotel overnight before taking a bus to Durham, North Carolina.

The girl’s grandmother reported her missing for the first time on Friday, according to the statement.

The FBI arrested Roy when he arrived in Durham on Sunday and the girl was recovered “peacefully,” the agency said.

Roy faces three charges, including luring and transporting a minor across state lines to commit an unlawful sexual act.

Public records listed one number that appeared to be linked to Roy, but the person who picked it up declined to comment.

The US Marine Corps did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
