PORTLAND, Oregon (KOIN) — A 13-year-old boy wearing a costume was hit by a car and seriously injured in Southeast Portland on Friday night.

Portland police said they responded to the scene after receiving reports of an accident around 7:45 p.m. near Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard and Southeast 22nd Avenue. SE Hawthorne Blvd then closed for about an hour between SE 21st and SE 23rd avenues before reopening.

“The person hit was a 13-year-old boy who was wearing a costume, so it appears to be Halloween related,” said Sgt. Kevin Allen, spokesperson for the Portland Police Bureau. “His family was at the scene and they went to the hospital with him.”

Police continue to investigate. Allen said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. There was no indication that intoxication was a factor. The driver, who was not arrested or cited, was released after speaking with police.

“This is another reminder that children and adults will be out this Halloween and that darkness and weather limit visibility,” Allen said.

Police are encouraging people to use the roads safely, drive sober and below the speed limit, and expect the unexpected.
