Glen Burnie, Maryland– Federal immigration agents fired into a moving vehicle Wednesday morning during law enforcement and removal proceedings, wounding one person and wounding another, officials said.
A spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department said neither person suffered life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital.
Anne Arundel police responded to a report of a shooting involving federal agents at approximately 10:50 a.m., and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were the only officials involved in the shooting, police said.
Initially, police said the agents approached a white truck, but the vehicle attempted to run them over. The police said that the officers opened fire on the truck, which increased its speed until it stopped in a wooded area.
When asked for comment, Department of Homeland Security officials said both civilians involved in the altercation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement are in the United States illegally. They did not clarify whether either man had been arrested.
“Continued efforts to encourage illegal aliens and violent instigators to actively resist ICE will only lead to more violent incidents,” Assistant Secretary of State Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
Anne Arundel Police said they will investigate the shooting, while the FBI is investigating the alleged assault on agents, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement is conducting an internal investigation.
