Texas A&M’s NCAA Tournament hopes still alive after loss to Texas

Texas A&M (19-10, 9-7 SEC) couldn’t take advantage of a packed Reed Arena on Saturday afternoon, falling to Texas 76-70 due to a poor shooting performance, and has now lost two straight games after back-to-back wins over Ole Miss and Oklahoma last week. Trending downward in terms of making the NCAA Tournament, the Aggies still need to win at least two more games to have a shot at March Madness.

It’s only fair to remind everyone that first-year head coach Bucky McMillan is ahead of schedule: The Aggies were picked to finish 13th in the SEC and will now finish no worse than 9-9 in conference play. Still, it’s also fair to be disappointed in the way McMillan’s veteran team has performed over the last eight games, especially on offense.

Heading into the final week of the regular season, a home test against Kentucky, combined with the season finale on the road against LSU, will most likely determine whether Texas A&M will make the NCAA Tournament, while the SEC Tournament also provides an opportunity to strengthen its resume.

While Saturday’s loss hurt their postseason chances, ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi barely moved the Aggies from their previous spot among the “Last Four Byes,” trading spots with the Longhorns. This simply means that everything is still ahead of the Aggies, who must improve from the field to have a chance to defeat Kentucky.

As the Aggies sit in the proverbial “bubble,” Lunardi stated Saturday that if Texas A&M had lost, they would have fallen to their “Last Four In” line, so if you’re looking for good news after a loss, this is the answer.

Texas A&M will host Kentucky on Tuesday at 6:00 pm CT, broadcast on ESPN2.
