Lottery game that has Making millionaires In the United States it will expand this summer to include players in England, Scotland and other parts of the United Kingdom.
The agreement was announced on Tuesday between the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the lottery game, and Allwyn UK, which runs the UK National Lottery. The deal still has to be approved by the UK Gambling Commission.
This will be the first time a lottery outside the United States has contributed to a Powerball jackpot.
“We’re constantly looking for ways to make sure we maintain Powerball’s cultural and commercial relevance,” said Matt Strawn, who heads Powerball and is CEO of the Iowa Lottery. “This is really the next natural progression in doing that.”
The same jackpot amount will be available to players on both sides of the Atlantic with payouts in the US in dollars and those in the UK in sterling.
For players in the United States, nothing has changed, including the $2 cost of a Powerball ticket and the jackpot odds of 1 in $292.2 million, Strawn said. But with players in the UK purchasing tickets, a larger pool of players will result in prizes increasing more quickly.
“Players consistently tell us in survey after survey that the fastest-growing Powerball jackpots are what they want to see,” Strawn said. “It is not surprising that the more jackpots, the more people play the game for a given drawing. The more people play, the more sales there are. The more sales, the more jackpots, the more people play.”
For players in the UK, Powerball will offer a chance to win much larger jackpots than are currently available on lotteries in the country and Europe.
The largest Powerball payout was just over $2 billion from a ticket purchased in 2022 in California. EuroMillions, a lottery offered in nine European countries and also run by Allwyn in the UK, paid out the largest prize to a British player of £195 million ($265 million) in 2022.
“Our ambition is to bring more games, more innovation and more excitement to the UK National Lottery – and there’s nothing more exciting than Powerball, with its transformative prizes and life-changing contribution to good causes,” Andrea Fiedler, chief executive of Allwyn UK, said in a statement.
Although the jackpots will be the same in each country, the estimated prize amounts will be different due to currency conversion rates and because the US declares prize amounts pre-tax, unlike the UK.
Powerball jackpots in the UK will also be paid out over 30 years, while jackpot winners in the US have the choice between taking their winnings spread out over years via an annuity or in cash – almost all winners Choose cash.
All players will compete for the same grand prize, but the smaller prizes will be different in the two countries.
Powerball is played in 45 US states as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
In the game, players choose numbers displayed on five white balls numbered from 1 to 69 and one number from 1 to 26 on the numbered red Powerball ball. Drawings will continue to be made Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
More than 31 million people play at least one National Lottery game every year across the UK
The new agreement will not change how Mega Millions, the other big US lottery game, operates.
