A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck a rural area in Nevada, east of the state capital, Carson City, on Monday.
The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. Its center was 12.9 miles (20.7 kilometers) east of Silver Springs and at a depth of 3.1 miles (5 kilometers).
A video filmed in the town of Fallon showed shattered glass and food scattered on the ground in the aisles of a grocery store.
Trina Enloe was sitting with one of her daughters doing homework in the dining room when the quake struck.
“You could hear the rumbling before it got to us,” Enloe said. She said the shaking continued for about a minute. The tremor toppled some cast iron candle holders, but Enlo did not see any cracks or damage at her home in Falun.
Some residents in nearby communities reported strong to very strong shaking and light to moderate damage, the USGS said.
