He demanded reforms that would provide at least two permanent seats with full rights, including the power of the veto, and two additional non -permanent seats.
“He cannot affirm that they are the United Nations while ignoring the voice of 54 nations. It is not possible,” Routo said in his direction to the annual high -level debate.
He pointed out that Africa dominates much of the security council agenda, provides some of the largest peace maintenance contingents and “has the heaviest costs of instability, but it is still the only continent without a permanent seat on the main table.”
“Reforming the Security Council is not a favor for Africa or anyone. It is a necessity for the survival of the United Nations,” he said.
“If the United Nations will continue to be relevant in this century, it must reflect today’s realities, not the postwar power arrangements of 1945”.
Haiti police
As for the role of Kenya in Haiti, Mr. Ruto described the multinational security support mission (MSS), which was authorized by the UN Security Council in October 2023 to help improve safety and surveillance, as a success and a warning story about global security governance.
He said Kenya “took a step forward, took a step forward and deployed our officers” to face the unbridled violence of gangs in Prince Port-Au. But the mission is still “under -financed, without being requested and operates below 40 percent of its authorized personnel force.”
Despite the limitations, he said: “The MSS has delivered results that many thought they were impossible.” The government institutions that were once invaded by gangs were restored, the schools reopened, the kidnappings have decreased and the airport and maritime of Haiti have resumed normal operations.
“This raises the question: if it could be achieved both with limited resources and stretched personnel in a matter of months, what else could have been achieved if the United Nations Fraternity had really acted in solidarity with the people of Haiti?” Mr. Ruto asked.
He urged the Security Council to ensure that the “hard profits” achieved so far by the mission led by Kenya are consolidated as the UN Delibera body in the next steps.
Kenya’s president also denounced the “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza, while requested the unconditional liberation of Israeli hostages.
He also expressed a deep concern about “unnecessary war” in Sudan and highlighted his country’s efforts to make the transition to renewable energy to help global effort to slow global warming.
