The history of Somalia is one of the “true national efforts supported by truly committed international partners,” he said, referring to the transition from the country of total civil conflict as of 2012.

“In fact, Somalia is evidence that multilateralism and global solidarity can make the world a better, safer and more progressive place.”

He affirmed that, as a current member of the Security Council, his nation is working with other international partners to find solutions for peace in the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Mr. Mohamud requested a “high immediate and lasting fire, humanitarian access without obstacles and renewed commitment to the solution of two states,” on the issue of Palestine.

‘International terrorism bags’

Back home, Somalia is fighting the “last remaining pockets of international terrorism while building a strong and sustainable national security architecture,” he said.

Remembering that Somalia was once the first democracy in Africa, he declared that the country is now preparing for its first complete national elections in 57 years. More than 30 independent political associations have already registered their participation.

‘Assume responsibility’ for economic development

“In Somalia, we are assuming the responsibility of our own economic development by taking advantage of the success of our recent relief of the reform -based debt,” said Mohamud, pointing out Somalia’s efforts to mitigate the cost of investment in public services.

He affirmed Somalia’s commitment to benefit from his strategic location and natural resources through commerce and said that to support that ambition, the country has joined the East Africa community, it is ratifying policies aligned with the African Continental Free trade area and continues the process of joining the World Trade Organization (WTO).

To combat the adverse impact of climate change, Mr. Mohamud announced the establishment of the National Climate Fund of Somalia to channel sustainable finances to communities transparently, along with efforts to restore degraded land and strengthen water safety.

He asked international institutions and capital markets to facilitate “accessible, affordable, predictable and fair” financing for the sustainable growth of Somalia and the mitigation of climate change.

“You cannot let the nations on the front line as Somalia face this crisis alone not supported by the dominant global financial architecture that is not suitable for the purpose in this era of great challenge.”
