Federal authorities on Monday arrested a Georgia teen accused of crimes The shooting last month near the University of Iowa’s popular nightlife districtFive people were injured.
U.S. Marshals arrested Damarian M. Jones, 17, of Cedar Rapids, near Atlanta, Iowa City officials announced in a news release. He faces multiple charges, including five counts of attempted murder and five counts of assault. He was being held in the Clayton County Jail in Georgia awaiting an extradition hearing to Iowa.
The statement did not explain how the guards tracked down Jones, exactly where he was arrested, or whether he was resisting them. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
Johnson County District Attorney Rachel Zimmerman Smith, who will investigate the case if Jones is returned to Iowa, said she did not have any details about the circumstances of the arrest and did not know if Jones had an attorney. Messages left at the U.S. Marshal’s Office in Des Moines and the Iowa City Police Department were not immediately returned.
Police said Jones was part of a large fight that broke out along a pedestrian mall lined with stores, bars and restaurants near the Iowa State campus just before 2 a.m. on April 19. During a break in the fighting, he allegedly fired six shots toward the crowd and then fled.
One person was shot in the head and another in the arm and chest. Two other people were injured in at least one leg and another person was injured in the abdomen. Monday’s news release said one victim remained hospitalized but did not identify any victim or explain that person’s condition.
