Columbus, Miss. A U.S. Air Force training plane crashed Tuesday in west Alabama and both pilots ejected safely, military officials said.

A T-38 Talon II from Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi was involved in an unfortunate accident around noon, military officials said.

“The cause of the accident is currently unknown and will be investigated by the Safety Investigation Board,” a news release from base officials said.

The public affairs office at Columbus Air Force Base said it could not provide information about the airmen’s condition other than to say they exited safely.

The base is home to the 14th Flying Training Wing, which trains pilots on a variety of aircraft. The T-38 Talon is a supersonic jet trainer.
