Victor, Iowa — A train collided with a truck in eastern Iowa on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring another, authorities said.

The accident occurred at the intersection of a state highway and the Iowa State Highway Railroad in a rural area about 70 miles (113 kilometers) east of Des Moines, according to Poweshiek County Sheriff Matt Machman.

One person in the truck died and another was transported with “serious injuries,” Machmann said in a statement.

He added that the train cars and engines derailed after the accident and caused “severe damage” to the railway. Pictures of the scene showed a huge pile of railway cars and billowing smoke.
