When the Giants selected Abdul Carter with the third overall pick, the hope was that the running back would make an immediate impact on the defense of a team that was showing signs of improving after a couple of disappointing seasons.

The Giants haven’t turned the corner, and Carter made more headlines for being benched to start last Sunday’s loss to the Packers than anything he’s done on the field this season. Carter has 23 tackles, half a sack, nine quarterback hits and one fumble recovery in his first 11 games.

During a news conference Wednesday, Carter said he’s “for sure” looking forward to this Sunday’s game against the Lions because it provides a chance to move on from what happened last week and a chance to show he’s growing as a player.

“The season isn’t over yet,” Carter said, via a team transcript. “I feel like the important thing is not how you start, but how you finish. So I’m going to finish strong.”

A strong finish won’t be enough to salvage another lost season for the Giants, but it would give reason to feel that Carter is the cornerstone the Giants believed he would be in April.
