The first week of the college basketball season is now in the books.

Here’s everything you missed in opening week and the latest Associated Press poll.

Arizona and Duke emerge to start the season

Koa Peat made a big move on opening night.

The freshman from Arizona had an extremely impressive debut for the Wildcats last Monday and led them past Florida 93-87 to start the year. The 6-foot-8 forward scored 30 points and seven rebounds, and made several huge dunks in the process.

He also scored 18 points in their win over Utah Tech on Friday and easily jumped into contention with the nation’s best right away. Thanks to the back-to-back wins, the Wildcats moved up eight spots to fifth place in this week’s poll. The Gators, who bounced back with a 40-point win over North Florida, fell to 10th place.

The top two teams in the poll stayed the same this week, although both teams actually changed. Houston jumped on Purdue after it blew out Lehigh and Towson. The Boilermakers beat both Evansville and Oakland. UConn moved up one spot to No. 3 after the Florida loss.

Peat wasn’t the only freshman in the country to get off to a good start. The Boozer twins led Duke to a perfect start last week, which included a 15-point win over Texas. Rivals.com five-star recruit Cameron Boozer had 15 points and 13 rebounds against the Longhorns, then combined with Cayden to score 39 points in his home opener on Saturday against Western Carolina.

Duke moved to No. 4 in this week’s poll. The Blue Devils will face Army and Indiana State this week before taking on Kansas next week.

BYU freshman AJ Dybantsa had 21 points and six rebounds in his first game. Dybantsa is widely considered one of the top picks to take the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft next summer. The Cougars, who beat Villanova on Monday and then dominated Holy Cross on Saturday, were ranked No. 7 in the latest poll. They will then face Delaware and then UConn in Boston on Saturday.

UNC off to a good start

With his job potentially on the line, Hubert Davis opened the season perfectly last week.

Davis, now in his fourth season leading Chapel Hill, and North Carolina began the season with back-to-back wins, including a 14-point home win over Kansas on Friday night. Caleb Wilson scored 24 points in that outing to lead the way.

As a result, the Tar Heels rose seven spots to No. 18 in this week’s poll. The Jayhawks, on the other hand, fell to 25th place.

While Davis has been to the NCAA Tournament three times, the Tar Heels had to claw their way back last spring after missing out on 2023 entirely by winning eight of their last 10 games. By North Carolina standards, simply sneaking into the tournament isn’t enough. And with his buyout undoubtedly manageable come spring, it wouldn’t be surprising if North Carolina moved on from Davis should the Tar Heels have another disappointing stretch.

But at least so far, Davis and North Carolina are off to a very promising start. However, they will have to move forward without guard Seth Trimble. He is out indefinitely after injuring a bone in his left forearm during practice Sunday. Trimble had 17 points and eight rebounds in the win over Kansas.

Fortunately, the Tar Heels have some time to adjust to life without Trimble. They will host Radford and NC Central this week before a key matchup with No. 17 Michigan State later this month.
