MILAN – American athletes received a rousing welcome at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony, but the mood changed when cameras briefly turned to Vice President JD Vance.

Led by skater and flag bearer Erin Jackson, Team USA was among the last delegations to enter Milan’s San Siro Stadium at the Parade of Nations on Friday.

The crowd cheered the Americans, but boos and whistles were heard as Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, appeared on stadium screens, waving American flags from the stands.

Support for the United States among its allies has been eroding as the Trump administration has adopted an aggressive foreign policy stance, including punitive tariffs, military action in Venezuela and threats to invade Greenland.

Boos were also heard when the Israeli delegation entered the stadium.

In addition to Milan, the athletes’ parades took place in three other locations: Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno and Predazzo. The Games are held over a vast area of northern Italy, making them the most geographically dispersed Winter Olympics in history.
