With iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, Apple makes some changes to its screenshot tool, and you may or may not like some of them.

By default, your iPhone or iPad now displays screenshots in full screen view. Here you can crop and scale the image, annotate it with Markup, quickly share it, delete it, and save it to Photos, Files, or Quick Note. All of these options are available in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, but they’re featured in Apple’s newly redesigned interface, which has rounded corners for controls, toolbars, and menus and some Liquid Glass elements mixed in.

But if you rarely edit or share your screenshots in the moment, this new full-screen view may be more annoying than welcome.

When you take a screenshot for the first time after updating to iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 (currently in beta), you’ll see full page view, but you’ll also be asked if you want to “Switch to thumbnail view.” If you accidentally press “Not Now” or tap somewhere else too quickly, there’s still a way to return to the temporary thumbnail view in the corner from iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

Under Settings » General, there is now a Screenshot menu that houses new customization options for screenshots. The one that interests us today is:

Disable it to return to the previous screenshot process. You can still access the screenshot editor by tapping on the screenshot thumbnail image.

Side-by-side iPhone screenshots illustrate the screenshot workflow: settings with full-screen preview toggle and HDR-SDR switcher, markup editor, and save, copy, and delete options menu.

While that’s the most important preference to worry about, you can customize other things you couldn’t before, including automatic visual search, CarPlay screenshots, and formatting. Check out our coverage on them for more information.

Note: iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are currently available as betas for developers (which anyone can join). Public beta versions will be released in July and stable versions are expected in the fall.
