There has been no move for Arsenal so far during the January transfer window, but Ben White remains a topic of conversation across the club.

Despite talk of a possible sale, the right-back has featured more regularly than some would have anticipated this season.

As injuries continue to affect Mikel Arteta’s options at full-back, speculation is beginning to arise over the 28-year-old’s future.

Everton have also shown interest in White this month and there is now a new development regarding his pursuit.

Ben Jacobs was on the Highbury Squad podcast this week, discussing the latest on Arsenal’s transfer activity. It was not surprising that he spent some time on the Ben White situation.

The journalist began by addressing current speculation about White’s desire to leave. “I’m not aware that he is too agitated to leave, but by the same token, if the right offer comes in, I think both Benjamin White and Arsenal will have a conversation.”

Jacobs also touched on Everton’s interest, noting that it is still unclear whether any moves will come this month or in the summer.

The most notable part of Jacobs’ update was his take on where White stands regarding his future. “From White’s point of view, I think he understands, regardless of his form or fitness, that in the long term it might be better to start looking elsewhere,” Jacobs said.

He added: “I understand that he will start to hesitate in the next, say, one or two years.” “Will there be that ability to play every week? Will there be that ability to maintain a starting spot or is he going to drop further down the pecking order?

“And that’s not something that I think makes the player feel particularly confident about being an Arsenal player, even if they end up winning trophies for fun.”

It would not seem prudent for both parties to reach an agreement this winter, as Arteta and White seek important titles for the remainder of 2024.

The real question now is what’s next. As more information emerges from sources like Jacobs, we get a clearer picture of how things could play out.

Arsenal valuation headache complicates Ben White’s future

While White may no longer be first choice, he still provides valuable depth for Mikel Arteta, so moving him mid-season would be a risky move.

The biggest problem is the drop in its market value. When Arsenal decide to sell, they may not get much return on their initial investment.

Transfermarkt reports that White’s value has fallen by €25 million over the past year, going from €55 million to just €30 million.

With fewer appearances this season, he only further weakens Arsenal’s negotiating position. It wasn’t long ago that White was one of the first names on the team’s roster.

This situation is not likely to be resolved in January. It’s probably best for both sides to wait until summer, when there will be more time to find the right solution.
